Brickwork & Blockwork in Rolleston & Selwyn

Garden walls, retaining blocks, brick repairs and edging — solid and level, built to last.

Wheelbarrow, shovel and stacked timber beside a red brick wall on a work site — brickwork in Canterbury

Brick and block work is the quiet backbone of a tidy section: the garden wall that holds the bank back, the edging that keeps the path crisp, the letterbox pillar that greets every visitor. Across Rolleston and the Selwyn District we take on the brickwork and blockwork jobs that are too small for the big masonry firms but too important to bodge — built plumb, level and properly footed for Canterbury soils and weather.

Good masonry starts below ground. Selwyn soils move with the seasons, so footings and drainage decide whether a wall stands straight in ten years or leans by next winter. We dig proper footings, lay to string lines and levels, keep courses even and joints consistent, and finish mortar neatly tooled rather than smeared. For retaining work we think about what the wall is holding back — soil, water and surcharge all matter — and we build accordingly.

Repairs that disappear

Cracked mortar, spalled bricks, a leaning garden wall or edging that has wandered across the path — most masonry problems are repairable if they are caught before the wall moves too far. We rake out failed joints and repoint to match, replace damaged units with the closest available match, and rebuild sections where rebuilding is honestly cheaper than patching. The goal is always the same: a repair you have to look twice to find.

Smaller structures are our sweet spot — garden and retaining walls, letterbox pillars, barbecue surrounds, path and patio edging, and tidy-ups where old meets new. Call or text 027 592 9582 with a photo and rough dimensions, and we will arrange a time to look, talk through the options and agree a fair price before any mortar is mixed.

Frequently asked questions

Can you match my existing bricks? We will source the closest available match and blend the repair; exact matches for older stock are not always possible, and we will tell you upfront.

Do small walls need consent? Most garden walls do not, but retaining walls over certain heights do — ask us on site and we will point you right.

How long does mortar take to cure? It firms up in a day or two but keeps curing for weeks — we will tell you when it is safe to load or backfill.

Wall Leaning? Mortar Crumbling?

Send a photo and rough dimensions — we will advise repair or rebuild, honestly.
